6 myths about sun protection. Are they true or false? Find out with Sauleda

  10 July 2018

With the arrival of summer and high temperatures, the Sauleda team wants to make our readers aware of the importance of sun protection.

When it comes to protecting ourselves from the sun in summer, there is so much information to consider, which makes it very difficult to find the right sun protection. That's why our blog post for today is about some myths and truths that you should know before exposing yourself to the sun:

1. The shade protects you from the sun (FALSE). As cool and comfortable as we can be under shade on a hot summer day, the truth is that shade is not a sun protector because radiation hits the ground and then bounces back to us. Therefore, although we are in the shade, it is important that we also apply sun protection.

That does not mean that all types of shade are the same; the shade of a tree is not the same as the shade provided by an awning. At Sauleda we are committed to sun protection. All our fabrics offer a high resistance to UV radiation, taking care of the visual environment and obtaining a controlled luminosity.

2. There is a sun protection factor for all skins (FALSE). Just as there is no awning for all types of buildings, there is no sun protection factor for all skin types. To find the sun protection that best suits each person, we must consider some physiological factors such as the type of skin or medication we take.

3. There are photosensitizing drugs (TRUE). Referring to the previous point, to adequately protect ourselves from the sun, we must take into account the medication that one takes. For example, a person taking birth control pills, no matter how dark their skin is, should use a factor 50 protection because these pills cause photosensitivity, or said in a different way, skin blemishes.

4. It is advisable to apply sun protection cream every two hours (FALSE). Applying sun protection cream every two hours is what most people do. But even more common is going to the beach to sunbathe and play in the sand, dry yourself with a towel, etc. once the sun protection is applied. This fact goes unnoticed by most of people, but the truth is that any activity on the beach or pool, moves the sunscreen so it will have to be re-applied.

5. Factor 50 protects us from all radiation (FALSE). Sun protection factors only indicate protection against Ultraviolet B radiation. This is not a good indicator, because it is too general. The best protection is not that of factor 100 but the one that covers the 4 radiation types (ultraviolet A, ultraviolet B, infrared and invisible). So, factor 100 does protect us from radiation but not much more.

6. Do not use any type of perfume after applying cream (TRUE). The best you can do is wait at least 30 minutes before applying any other lotion. For example, applying an anti-mosquito spray immediately after putting on sunscreen produces a cutaneous interaction which cancels each other out.

¡ENJOY SUMMER AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN!
